The Atlanta Hawks used a 45-point third quarter to top the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. Atlanta outscored the T-Wolves, 45-to-20, in the third frame and took control of the game. With the 134-122, victory over Minnesota, Atlanta has now won back-to-back games for the first time since November.
Minnesota came out hot and controlled the first half from the tip. On the second game of a back-to-back, the T-Wolves started the evening with a 42-point first quarter. D’Angelo Russell, finished with 31 points, and started the game on fire. Minnesota carried a 73-to-61 lead at halftime.
“When we got into halftime, we just really wanted to flip the narrative and bring some energy, so that’s what we did,” Young said.
Trae Young played masterfully, simply put. A ‘nutmeg’ move through Jaylen Nowell’s legs was the emphatic stamp on an incredible night. Young started the game scoreless through the first period. He finished the night with 37 points, hit 6 three-pointers, and had 14 assists. During the game, Young cracked the top ten list with his 42nd all-time 30+ point and 10+ assist game.
De’Andre Hunter and Onyeka Okongwu also continued their streak of consistent play. Both players were impact players on the defense, and finished with +11 and +20 +/- ratings, respectively. John Collins finished with another double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds. Add in Danilo Gallinari with 15 points and Kevin Huerter with 12 points, the Hawks finished with six players in double figures.
Atlanta’s next game is at home against the Miami Heat on Friday. This is the third time in 10 days the two teams have faced off. It should be a playoff like atmosphere in downtown Atlanta. Tip-off for that game is at 7:30pm eastern.
