The Atlanta Hawks ended up with the number one overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, following the results of Sunday’s NBA Draft lottery. Atlanta came in having only a 3% chance of landing the top selection in June’s draft.
Mark Tatum, the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner, announced team after team, and Atlanta remained on the board, finding themselves in the final four with: Washington, Houston and San Antonio. Somehow, some way, Atlanta defied the odds, overcoming the fifth-lowest odds of all-time to end up with the number one overall pick.
The Hawks have only held the number overall selection one other time, back in 1975. They selected David Thompson that year, who ended up signing with the Denver Nuggets, and the rival-ABA league.
Early murmurs, are linking the Hawks and Frenchman, Alexandre Sarr, of Australia’s Perth Wildcats. The 7’1” phenom could form a potentially nice duo with Hawks’ star, Trae Young. He is also familiar with the city having played for the Overtime Elite league based out of Atlanta.
The NBA Draft will be held in New York City on June 26th and 27th.
