There have been rumored reports of the Hawks and Trae Young looking to get an extension done by midnight of Monday 8/2/21.
This shouldn’t be the least bit surprising to any Hawks fans and was very well deserved on Trae’s part. Because Trae has not made any All NBA Teams, he is not eligible for a super max, so, I expect this to roughly be in the 5 year/170M range.
However, there will most likely be a clause that allows Trae to get a pay raise if he qualifies for the rose rule. The Rose Rule allows young stars in the NBA to qualify for a higher maximum salary–30% of the cap instead of 25%–early in their careers. Trae Young can qualify if he either: makes an All NBA Team or wins an MVP in the ’21-’22 season. This would net Trae Young roughly an extra 40 million. Talk about an incentive!
With the start of the NBA free agency just hours away, I hope the Hawks can wrap up this Trae and JC extension sooner rather than later.
