Per multiple reports, the Atlanta Hawks acquired San Antonio Spurs’ guard, Dejounte Murray, in exchange for forward, Danilo Gallinari, three future-first round selections and a pick swap in 2026.
Atlanta is sending a 2023 first-round pick (via the Charlotte Hornets) and their own first-round picks from 2025 & 2027, both of which are unprotected. With a full rebuild happening in the Alamo City, Gallinari should expect to be cut by the team and sign with a championship contender. All signs now point toward the franchise building around young guard, Josh Primo, and moving head first into a full rebuild.
Atlanta finally pairs All-Star, Trae Young, with another All-Star caliber player in Murray. Per Chris Haynes of Yahoo! Sports, Young is “ecstatic” to have Murry join him in the backcourt and he should be. Murray was selected to his first All-Star game last season and coming off a career-best 21.1 points, 9.2 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game.
This is the first time that two players averaged 20+ points and 8+ assists per game in one season, and will be on the same team, per Elias Sports Bureau.
Atlanta adds another primary ball-handler and scorer that the team desperately was looking for. Murray also adds some much-needed defense to a group that drastically was in search of defensive help on the perimeter.
This may not be the only move Atlanta makes, as multiple outlets have confirmed that the Hawks “are not done.” Atlanta is still engaged in trade talks across the league and many believe the Murray-deal was the first domino.
What are your thoughts on Murray coming to Atlanta? Do you like the fit or not? Who else should the Hawks be targeting? Let us know in the comment section below!
The Hawks do not have to make another “huge” deal; but their are still seven roster spots at play. Some unfinished items still to firm up.
> Delon Wright (resign w/ Bird rights)
> Skylar Mays (minimum RFA)
> Sharife Cooper (GL RFA)
> Knox (unqualified minimum UFA)
> Lawawu-Cabarrot (minimum UFA)
> Dieng (minimum UFA)
> Williams (replaced: Dejounte Murray)
> Griffin (1st rd rookie scale draft rights)
> Martin (2nd rd draft rights)
> Brown (two-way contract)
> Replace Gallinari in front court
Knox & TLC probably squeezed by Hawks drafting two SFs; but one could return if Mays is squeezed. There are two front court players to replace in Gallinari & Dieng; but Johnson may steal some playing time. Right now I feel like Wright & Cooper should return.
The Hawks still have an open roster spot for a 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5. But, I would not expect for the front office to lock in players until some veterans have their agents start calling about a piece of our MLE or signing a veteran minimum.
